Unusually, our Rapsodia in Rosso celebrates the best of three of central Italy’s most famous regions. The humble designation ‘Vino d’Italia’ is certainly deceptive, as this wine transcends any single region and denomination.
Riccardo Cotarella, President of both the Italian and the Global associations of winemakers, created in his own family winery a blend uniting his native Umbria, neighbouring Lazio (the region of Rome), and world-famous Tuscany.
The composition (‘Rhapsody in Red’) consists of Syrah grapes from Lazio (50%), Merlot from Umbria (30%) and Sangiovese from Tuscany (20%). Each variety is vinified separately in stainless steel, and matures in small French oak barrels (barriques). Selection and blending take place at the end of maturation.
The result is a wine with a very intense and dark ruby red colour, and aromas of equal intensity – notes of dark berries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and black currants, followed by hints of sweet spices. A rich and encompassing flavour, excellent body, warm, well balanced with great length; can age in bottle for at least another ten years.
